Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey was originally released in 1997 and it scared the crap out of me. I was just a kid at the time, and the thought of these weird wee creatures being churned into snacks creeped me out no end. Now I’m a grown ass adult, I could play the 2014 release Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty on PS4, finally being able to appreciate the game for what is really was, an incredibly good platformer puzzle game. Due to the success of the re-release, it was just a matter of time before our favourite farting fella Abe returned.
Oddworld: Soulstorm was announced back in March 2016 with a press release, stating “Oddworld: Soulstorm picks up from Abe’s genesis and directly follows on from the overthrow of RuptureFarms and the liberation of his blighted workmates.” Struggling with freedom, and surviving as a group of 300 has proved challenging for Abe. Lorne Lanning, the creator of the Oddworld series explains “There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell. Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle.”
Oddworld: Soulstorm has been using the Twitter to communicate with fans using an interactive alternate reality style game. Twitter accounts such as Ed the Mudokon, and spirit 1029 tweet or communicate clues for fans to pick apart. This collaboration leads to the gradual release of info on the game, including some dire looking photographs making me feel like a creeped-out kid all over again. So far, 2 images have been revealed, with a further 3 to be found.
Despite what little information we have, the press release from 2016 reveals Soulstorm is aiming to come to complete fruition sometime in late 2017. Until then, if you want to find out more you can follow the twitter links to communicate with Ed the Mudokon and the Spirit of 1029 to solve and decode clues.
